Watch Jennifer Lawrence Seduce and Destroy Men in Sleek Red Sparrow

Jennifer Lawrence is returning to her Hunger Games roots. At long last, a trailer has materialized for her upcoming film Red Sparrow—a highly stylized spy tale that was supposed to come out this year, but got pushed back to 2018. Directed by Francis Lawrence (no relation), the filmmaker who helmed the last three Hunger Games movies, Sparrow is an age group up from the Y.A. world of Katniss Everdeen.

The actress stars as Dominika Egorova, a destitute ballerina whose career ends after a tragic incident. With nowhere else to turn, she joins the Sparrow School, an organization that turns pliable young people into stealthy assassins by teaching them how to weaponize themselves. Naturally, Dominika rises in the ranks, becoming the most dangerous Sparrow of all time—as per the trailer’s voice-over, provided by Joel Edgerton, who plays an American C.I.A. agent trying to win Dominika’s trust.

“Young officers trained to seduce and manipulate, to use their bodies, to use everything—that’s what she is,” he says. And the trailer really puts emphasis on the whole seduction thing, showcasing Dominika toying with powerless men who fall at her well-heeled feet.

It opens with a sumptuously dressed Dominika sitting quietly on a bed, waiting for something ominous to arrive. The scene quickly alludes to her prowess, sneaking in a Mr. & Mrs. Smith-esque moment where she kills a customer who thought she was a common escort. Here and elsewhere, Red Sparrow appears very much like a movie Angelina Jolie would have made in the early aughts, before she became dead-set on saving the world—basically Salt, but with more wigs, or a less pulpy, more Russian version of Atomic Blonde, the Charlize Theron vehicle that came out earlier this year.

Either way, this looks like an action movie with a female lead that could have franchise potential, something we don’t get enough of in Hollywood. And Lawrence has proven adept in this field before, not just as Katniss but also in the most recent X-Men movies. Red Sparrow will hit theaters on March 2, 2018.
