The Republic of Korea has initiated plans for a Korea Model School in Abuja. The project is conceived under the multilateral cooperation between Nigeria and Korea. It is to be built along the Airport road and will cost $15 million (about N3 billion).

Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Noh Kyu-duk, who led a delegation from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), to the Minister of FCT, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, described the project as one of the largest bilateral projects between the two countries.

Bello noted that the school when completed in 2018, would serve as a landmark and strengthen the bond between Nigeria and Korea that began in 1982 when President Chun Doo-hwan visited Nigeria.

Nigeria is expected to provide the counterpart fund and give all the necessary support to make the project successful.

Ambassador said the Korean government would build certain parts of the Model School, while the FCT Administration will handle other parts.

He said the programme is unique as it would serve as a landmark in educational sector between the two countries. KOICA will develop capacity building programme for the school’s would-be teachers to ensure quality.

FCT Minister, however, appealed to the Korean government to also consider investing in electricity generation and waste disposal in view of the geometric rise in Abuja’s that population was posing serious challenges in the areas of managing the city’s traffic.
