Appple launched three new iPhones today at its event in Cupertino: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is just an upgrade of the existing iPhone 7 models without completely changing the model. It still has home buttons but will have wireless charging. The phones can also shoot video in 4k.  You can buy the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus in silver, black, or gold for $699 or $799 depending if you get the Plus or not.

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus sport an all-glass body and comes in silver, space grey and a new gold colours. According to Apple, the glass is reinforced with a steel and copper structure and is "the most durable ever in a smartphone".

Well we'll have to see about that when users start making use of the phone.

The devices have 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch retina displays and run on Apple's A11 bionic chip.

The iPhone 8 comes with a 12MP rear facing camera that is more powerful than that of the iPhone 7. The iPhone 8 Plus comes with a dual-lens 12MP camera.

As expected, the new phones now support wireless charging. You can place the phone on an inductive surface. It works on the Qi wireless standard, which Apple says it will help expand to public spaces such as airports and cafes.

The thing I'm actually worried about here is the fact that Apple didn't announce its own wireless charger.

However it'll probably work with third party wireless chargers. That means you'll have to get the wireless charger separately.

The iPhone 8 comes in 64 GB and 256 GB variants and will cost around N265,000. The 8 plus comes in the same variants and costs around N303,000.The devices will be available for order from September 15 and in stores from September 22. iOS 11 will be rolled out from September 19.

Preordering starts September 15 but will hit stores September 22.

The iPhone X is the newest and craziest phone from Apple. Pronounced "iPhone 10", the phone has no home button and is nothing but screen from top to bottom. The functions of the home button have been now moved to a "side button".  The iPhone X's battery life is said to last two hours longer than the iPhone 7. Just like the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the iPhone X can be charged wirelessly with an inductive pad.  The iPhone X will also take pictures and videos in very high resolution.

The most important and newest feature on the iPhone X is the Face ID feature. Just like your finger print, when you first get the iPhone X you must register your face using the front facing camera. Once you register your face, you can unlock the iPhone X by holding the phone up to your face. Apple has said that it has taken special care to make sure that masks and photos cannot fool the iPhone X. People will have to use the actual person's face to unlock the iPhone X. With Face ID you can also unlock apps and pay for things.

According to Apple, Face ID is more secure and convenient than using your fingerprint.

Apple actually joined the smartphone trend of bigger screens with smaller bezels. I'm wondering if they dumped the home button because their closest competitor Samsung removed theirs.

It features a new OLED display that's more colorful than the LCD screens Apple used in earlier iPhones. According to Apple its a Super Retina Display.

The Super Retina Display supports HDR and 3D Touch support.

In case you're wondering how to get back to your home screen without the home button you'll have to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to return home. That gesture also allows you to multitask - swipe up and pause, and you can multitask and switch between apps. You can call Siri by saying "Hey Siri" or simply pressing the side button. It also supports wireless charging.

For unlocking the phone Touch ID has been dumped for FaceID. The 3D front-facing camera learns what the owner looks like and is only wrong one in 1 million times. It will come in 64GB and 256GB variants with prices starting from N385,000. It will ship from November 3.
Unlike the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the iPhone X goes on sale starting at $999 on October 27, and ships out November 3.

If you cannot get your hands on the iPhone X, make sure to cop the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in the meantime.
